StudentCam is C-SPAN’s annual national video documentary competition that encourages students to think critically about issues that affect our communities and our nation. 2023 marked the 19th year of the competition and we invited middle and high school students to create a short documentary addressing the theme: “If you were a newly elected member of Congress, which issue would be your first priority and why?”
12th grade student Jacob Jewell from College Street Vocational Center in Lake Charles, Louisiana won 2nd Prize for his documentary on mitigating storm damage through levees and bulkheads, “The Forgotten Coast.” As a 2nd Prize winner, Jacob will receive $1,500 in prize money.
C-SPAN is funded by America’s cable and satellite television companies, who also support StudentCam. In Lake Charles, C-SPAN is available locally through Optimum.
“Optimum is proud to continue its partnership with C-SPAN, encouraging middle and high school students to engage in the political process through StudentCam,” said Jen Ostrager, Senior Vice President of Community Affairs at Optimum. “We appreciate and thank all students in our footprint for their hard work and creativity in submitting thoughtful entries. Congratulations to Jacob on this outstanding achievement!”
